the birth of "Kids in the City"

4/23/09
I'm very excited that the new CD has arrived! I teamed up again with producer Rich Rankin who I co-produced the "Wiggleworms Love You" CD with...and we had a blast making this record!

The idea for "Kids in the City" was born on the CTA train in 2006. I was running late to a gig at Millennium Park and I was on the train, sort of frantic that I wouldn't make it there on time. I somehow channeled that energy into rattling off a tune in my head about the "El Train" and from there my first kids song was born.

Chicago is such a vibrant city, I thought, why not write some songs about Chicago and the city in general? There's so many families raising kids here in the city, I thought this was a perfect theme.

The songs blossomed through the next year and a half...a song about the zoo, a Chicago Hot Dog, and ending with a quirky tune about a guy named Uncle Ukulele's and his string band!

I tested the songs out with my Wiggleworms students and they went over well! I'm excited that some of these songs are great for classroom use.

Finally in November of 2008, I felt ready to get into the studio. We used the same philosophy as the Wiggleworms record: all acoustic instruments, to give it a folky feel, but on this CD infusing my pop style into the songs as well!

I hope you all can join me at the CD Release show at the Beat Kitchen on May 17th!
